Cancer is a scary condition which affects millions of people a year. Understanding the early signs and symptoms of skin cancer and how to tell a normal mole from a potentially concerning mole can be crucial in preventing a life-threatening situation. Find out more about the early signs of skin cancer and how you can determine if your mole is normal or suspicious with Dr. Alan Rockoff and Dr. Katherine Fening at The Rockoff Dermatology Center with locations in Andover, MA and Brookline, MA.
Spotting Skin Cancer with the ABCDEs
- Asymmetry: Cancerous moles are often asymmetrical. A normal mole is symmetrical and one solid color.
- Border: The border of a suspicious mole may look jagged or uneven. A normal mole is round or ovular in shape.
- Color: A mole should have one solid color within smooth, ovular or circular borders. If you have more than one color in your mole or if it is very dark or black, you should consult with your dermatologist.
- Diameter: A normal mole is usually less than 6 millimeters in diameter, or smaller than an everyday pencil eraser.
- Evolution: A cancerous mole changes shape, size, or color, often quickly. Most cases of skin cancer occur in a new growth, meaning that old moles normally do not develop cancerous cells.
Skin Cancer Diagnosis and Treatments in Andover, MA and Brookline, MA
If you think you have a suspicious mole, you should see your dermatologist for a skin examination. This visit will allow your doctor to go over your skin to ensure that there are no concerning moles or marks on your skin. If there is, your doctor may take a biopsy to examine in a laboratory setting to determine if the mole is cancerous or benign. Your doctor may remove the mole altogether. It is wise to consult with your dermatologist to determine the best course of treatment for you.

Botox could help take years off your appearance in no time.
Who says that you have to undergo anesthesia, incisions or surgery in order to say goodbye to facial lines and wrinkles? Sometimes all you need is a simple refresher treatment to help smooth out your skin and give you that youthful glow. Our Brookline, MA, dermatologists Dr. Alan Rockoff and Dr. Katherine Fening could give you the results you want with Botox.
By now, you’ve probably heard about Botox treatment. This treatment only requires us to inject a few very thin needles into certain muscles of the face to temporarily stop them from contracting. By preventing them from contracting, this instantly reduces and even eliminates the appearance of certain lines and wrinkles.
Botox is an easy, effective treatment for dynamic wrinkles that appear when you smile, laugh or squint. If you have mild-to-moderate wrinkles on your forehead, around your eyes (often referred to as crow’s feet), wrinkles around your nose and chin or laugh lines and you want to get younger-looking skin, then it might be time to talk to our Brookline, MA, skin doctors about getting Botox.
What is involved in getting Botox treatment?
There are so many benefits to choosing Botox. This treatment alone only takes a couple of minutes, there is absolutely no recovery period (you can return to work or your activities immediately after) and you’ll notice results in a couple of days. Plus, the needles are so thin that you’ll notice nothing more than a slight pinch.
Of course, we know that some people loathe the idea of needles. Don’t worry! If needles make you squeamish but you still want to get Botox then talk to us about applying a numbing gel over the areas prior to administering the injections.
How long do results last?
One thing to keep in mind is that you won’t walk out of our office with a suddenly refreshed appearance. It takes a few days for Botox to work its magic. You’ll see wrinkles smoothing away in as little as three to four days with full results visible within a week.
Botox results last about six months; however, if you love what Botox was able to do for your appearance you can come back in for a refresher treatment to maintain results for longer.
