Find out how our Fraxel laser could treat most of your skin concerns.
From fine lines to acne scars, we all have certain imperfections that keep our skin from looking its best. But what if we told you that your dermatologist in Brookline and Andover, MA, Dr. Alan Rockoff, can reduce or even eliminate these common flaws to reveal healthier, more radiant skin? If your interest is piqued, it’s time to find out about Fraxel laser skin resurfacing!
What is Fraxel?
While many people turn to Fraxel laser treatment to treat acne scars, wrinkles, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation, that list is only a small sampling of the skin problems that this simple laser treatment can improve. While the face is the most commonly treated area, patients may also choose to get Fraxel laser therapy on the chest, neck, back, hands, and arms.
Fraxel treatment uses a dual laser system, with one laser designed to target sun damage and pigmentations (e.g. age spots), while the other is used to penetrate a bit deeper to break up scar tissue, smooth away wrinkles, and improve the skin’s overall tone and texture.
What does the Fraxel procedure entail?
Before we begin treatment at our Brookline and Andover offices, your skin doctor will apply a numbing solution over the skin. Once the numbing gel has taken effect (taking about 45 minutes), the laser is directed over the skin. This procedure only takes about 30 minutes to complete, and while you may feel a slight pricking sensation, the numbing gel will help to greatly minimize any discomfort.
Is there a recovery period?
While Fraxel laser treatment isn’t invasive, it will leave skin red and peeling. Because of this, many patients choose to take a few days off from work in order to allow their skin time to heel. It can take up to 5 days for the peeling and redness to go away. During this time, it’s important that you wear sunscreen to protect your skin whenever you go outside.
How many Fraxel sessions will I need?
This will depend on the type and severity of the issues you are treating. Minor pigmentations can get removed in as little as one or two sessions, while more serious scarring or wrinkles can take up to 5 sessions. You can expect, on average, to go through about 3-5 sessions spaced several weeks apart.

Fraxel laser treatment offers an effective, non-invasive way to reduce signs of aging, fade age spots and scars, and improve skin texture. Andover and Brookline, MA, dermatologists Drs. Alan Rockoff and Katherine Fening help their patients care for their skin with Fraxel laser therapy and other cosmetic skin treatments.
How does Fraxel laser treatment work?
Fraxel treatments target deep layers of the skin with pinpoint accuracy, yet don't harm healthy cells surrounding the treated area. The laser light destroys damaged skin cells, spurs the body to produce healthy replacement cells and increases collagen production. Because treatments only target a small fraction of skin cells, the surface of the skin remains undamaged.
When is Fraxel treatment recommended?
Your Andover or Brookline dermatologist may recommend the laser treatment if you have:
- Dark skin patches or age spots
- Sun damage
- Acne scars
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Surgical scars
- Acitinic keratosis
What happens during and after Fraxel treatment?
Numbing cream applied before your treatment ensures that you remain comfortable during the treatment. Although you may notice a little warmth when the laser light is activated, the device offers an integrated cooling effect that is very helpful. Treatment time varies depending on the number of areas to be treated, but generally takes about an hour.
Although it usually takes a little while to see significant results, you'll notice that your skin soon begins to look smoother, firmer and brighter after a treatment or two. Collagen regeneration doesn't happen instantaneously but takes a few months to occur. By the third or fourth month after treatment, you'll probably see a noticeable change in your appearance.
Your skin may be red and swollen immediately after your treatment. Redness may last for a few days or few weeks, depending on your skin type. It's important to use sunscreen to protect your skin and prevent new damage. Most people need four to six treatments monthly laser treatments for best results. Yearly follow-up treatments can help you maintain your appearance.
