Think you sweat a lot? Find out if your sweat sessions could be due to a medical condition.

Do you sweat through several shirts a day? Do you find that your hands are almost always drenched in sweat, making it embarrassing to shake hands with people? If this sounds like you, then learn more about hyperhidrosis and how our Andover and Brookline, MA Hyperhidrosisdermatologists, Dr. Alan Rockoff and Dr. Katherine Fening, can help provide some relief.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Simply put, this condition is characterized by excessive sweating. Even though people with hyperhidrosis don’t happen to have more sweat glands than other people, the sweat glands they have are overactive. There are several areas of the body that can experience hyperhidrosis including the hands, underarms, feet and face.

What causes it?

There are two main causes for hyperhidrosis:

Primary: This condition is often inherited, meaning that someone in your family may also deal with this same problem.

Secondary: Certain medical conditions, medications and lifestyle choices (e.g. alcoholism) can predispose you to hyperhidrosis.

How do I treat hyperhidrosis in Andover and Brookline?

While this can be an embarrassing issue to deal with, the good news is that there are many treatment options. This condition requires a proper diagnosis and treatment plan from your skin doctor. Once we determine whether you are dealing with primary or secondary hyperhidrosis we can create the treatment plan that is right for you. Here are some of the more conservative treatment options:

  • Oral medications: An anticholinergic may be prescribed but because it is a systemic treatment keep in mind that it can dry out the whole body.
  • Topical medications: By applying cream to the affected areas of the body you can control the amount of sweating that occurs.
  • Electrical therapy: Also referred to as Iontophoresis, this treatment uses exposure to electrical currents in water to minimize sweat gland activity. This therapy is performed several times a week in order to be successful.
  • Botox: While you may only know this treatment for targeting wrinkles and lines it can do so much more including treat hyperhidrosis of the face, hands and underarms. A series of thin needles are injected into the area and the results can last for several months before needing to be repeated.

If these treatments don’t provide you with the relief that you had hoped for then you may want to talk to us about the pros and cons of surgery.
